Are Your Genes Keeping You Fat?
Four out of five black women are overweight or obese. But it might not be their fault they’re fat. Many black women just lose weight differently. And new studies are helping black women finally battle the bulge effectively.
Black Women Burn Fewer Calories
A recent study on exercise suggests that you may be wasting your time at the gym. Researchers found that exercise is less likely to lead to weight loss for black women than for white women.
The study, which focused on adolescent girls, found that,
“85% of the black girls who engaged in moderate levels of exercise at 12 years old were as likely to be obese by the time they reached 14 as were those who hardly exercised at all.
For white girls, the results were almost exactly reversed, with only 14% likely to become obese by age 14.”
What Can You Do? Switch To Yoga
Black women can still benefit from metabolism-boosting workouts like yoga. But when it comes to weight loss, black women have better results when they focus more on calorie reduction than calorie burning.
Black Women Require Fewer Calories
Black women not only conserve energy better than white women, they need fewer calories to keep going.
What Can You Do? Eat Less
If you’re trying to lose weight, keep in mind that most online calorie calculators are calibrated for white women.
Once you get your results, subtract 150 calories to compensate for the lower caloric needs of black women.
Black Women Burn Fat More Slowly
Black women burn fat more slowly, even after exercise, than white women. That means once the fat creeps up, it’s more likely to stick around.
What Can You Do? Keep An Eye On The Scale
Because even minimal weight gain can take a while to burn of, black women have to keep a closer eye on the scale to stay slim.
As soon as those numbers start to creep up, it’s time to cut your calorie consumption down.
Black Women Store Fat More Easily
Black Women’s bodies are too good at holding onto fat from the foods that we eat. Pair that with difficulty burning that fat and you have the perfect recipe for obesity.
What Can You Do? Eat Less Fat
When burning fat is hard and fat tends to stick around, black women’s best defense against fat is to cut down on their consumption of it.
Stick to vegetable and lean protein and make sure that fat composes no more than 20% of your calories for the day.
Some Black Women React Badly to Carbs
Many academics, including Historian Dr. Constance Hilliard believe that black women have an intolerance to wheat that makes us overeat it, put on weight and even develop an addiction to it.
What Can You Do? Cut The Wheat
There’s no need switch to a low-carb diet. Instead, cut wheat out and replace it with other carbohydrates like whole grain rice or potatoes.
Black Women Are More Susceptible To Food Allergies
Got belly bulge that won’t go down? The problem could be food allergies. Black women are three times more likely to develop food allergies than the general population. And those food allergies can lead to bloating — and even headaches and fatigue.
What Can You Do? Keep Track
Keep a journal of what you eat every day. The next time you feel bloated or gain weight, look back for likely culprits. And keep in mind that foods can cause negative symptoms up to three days after you’ve eaten them.
Black Women Have Slower Metabolisms
Some women can eat whatever they want and not gain a pound, while some of us think about McDonald’s and don’t gain weight.
What Can You Do? Boost Your Metabolism
Drinking water adequately and regularly is the simplest and most effective way to speed up metabolism. Your body needs water to process calories. If you are even mildly dehydrated, your metabolism may slow down. In one study, adults who drank eight or more glasses of water a day burned more calories than those who drank four.
To drink enough water in a day, you need discipline. Having a bottle of water that you really love is a good solution, help you be reminded throughout the day.
