Each year, just as the world has begun to settle in from the December holidays and start to the new year, designers begin to release special capsule collections in celebration of the Lunar New Year. While typically associated with Chinese New Year, the Lunar New Year differs in that it isn’t only observed in China, it’s celebrated across other countries in Asia too. The Lunar New Year marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is traditional to many east Asian countries. This year, it begins on February 12 and celebrations will mark the year of the Ox.
Over the last few years luxury brands have capitalized on this important time in Asian culture, creating special capsule collections, which pay homage to the holiday in some way. This year to celebrate Lunar New Year, Gucci has released a special capsule collection to commemorate the Year of the Ox. The color red is often associated with the Lunar New Year as it symbolizes good fortune and joy, and Gucci chose to subtly incorporate the color within its Lunar New Year capsule. The collection features pop icon Doraemon, which is an iconic figure in Japanese comics (which are called manga) and anime.
The collection, which was imagined by Alessandro Michele, coincides with the manga’s 50th anniversary and features the Doraemon over Gucci’s iconic GG motif finished with a deep red leather trim. The collection includes both RTW and accessories for men and women. As for the bags, the capsule includes new versions of iconic silhouettes and prices range from $830 to $5,800.
