As a nurse, you have a lot of responsibilities. Challenges in nursing are not a novelty for sure, but it seems like they increased with modern times instead of decreasing.

It is very easy to forget how highly stressful job nursing is, and that unfortunately is usually not paid enough, considering how much effort and hours you put in working it. 1. Staff Shortages

This is, unfortunately, a very common problem nowadays. When the hospital you work in is short-staffed, you are in risk of having many professional and personal issues, since you’re left with no other option than to work more shifts and cover for your coworker absences. 

This means you will sometimes miss out on important life occasions or date nights with your partner. When your personal and social life is suffering, it is quite normal that you will be more frustrated, which can impact your work.

Nursing is already a highly stressful job, and when you combine that with issues like lack of personnel, you can be sure there will be many unsatisfied people. Not having time to rest and relax and working double shifts will cause burnout. 

2. Working Long Shifts

As mentioned, long working hours and overtime aren’t a new issue in this field. Usually, nurses are expected to work 12-hour shifts with some additional overtime. Also, if there were some serious accidents, nurses are obligated to stay.

Working as a nurse is physically as well emotionally demanding, and if you do not have enough time to rest and relax, you will not be able to provide the best quality care. This will also affect your health. Overworking can lead to chronic back, leg, and shoulder pain. 

Some nurses can even develop long-term medical conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular issues.

Also, you are at risk of suffering from daytime sleepiness and fatigue. The most dangerous thing is that you can suffer from diminished mental function, which can affect your ability to make proper decisions that can endanger your patient.

3. Meeting Patient Expectations

It is only natural that your patients have very high expectations. But what they do not know is how hard it is for you to meet them because of all those budget cuts and short-staffing issues. They also do not know, and honestly, they do not care for how many patients you look for beside them. So hearing that your patients are unhappy with your service after all the immense strain and effort you put in can affect your morale, motivation, and can cause a lot of stress.

Since most hospitals go through short-staffing problems, all you can do is to reach out for help among your co-nurses and offer your helping hand when they need it as well.

4. Workplace Hazards

Working in an environment as a hospital will put you in a lot of hazardous situations. You regularly work with needles, infective body fluids, sharp tools, aggressive people, and heavy equipment. Running on wet slippery floors is one of the most common reasons for injuries among nurses. This can cause some serious accidents for both staff and patients. Hospitals are very busy places, so it can happen that the staff did not have time, or they simply forgot to check the floor for potential hazards. 5. Discrimination

This is the worst part but unfortunately very common even nowadays. It is widely known, for ages now, that older experienced nurses are let’s say harsh with their young successors. 

Being a new nurse in an unfamiliar environment is intimidating. 

First, you will have to adjust to many new things, just after that you will have to learn to handle the nursing hierarchy in your hospital, and on top of that all there are a lot of skills you have to conquer. That should not be so hard to do if your mentors and much more experienced co-nurses are welcoming and tolerant. 

Unfortunately, these veterans usually forget that you all play for the same team, so they show you some teeth, and they refuse to cooperate with you. There are a lot of cases where their attitudes dull the motivation and enthusiasm of new nurses. There were even situations where young people questioned themselves if they made the right career choice, which is very sad.


Now that we’ve taken a look at the very real challenges of nursing that our healthcare professionals face on a daily basis, let’s stop and think about how we can help them.

Nurses are a foundation of the healthcare system, and they deserve to be safe and sound at their workplace. They are a resilient, proactive group, and regardless of all those problems we just mentioned, they still strive to be the best at their jobs and to offer you as their patient the best possible care. 

All these issues I stated here are very difficult to solve, I admit, but there should be a way to improve them at least.
